17 REVIEW: Makeup brushes on a budget.

Hello!

I have a confession to make. I'm poor. My life is generally in a state of ridiculousness at the moment but I'm pretty convinced that's no excuse for not having a nice face. Because of my state of poverty, my makeup brush collection had got into a terrible state - I was reduced to one powder brush, one angled blusher brush, a blending brush and a shadow brush. And that's it. I know, #firstworldproblems. 

I'd heard on the grapevine that the Fraulein 38 brushes were good but I was initially skeptical - I'm used to Mac brushes but I've pretty much lost all of them (having moved house a lot in the past 3 years). The Fraulein 38 brushes are ridiculously cheap, however, so I decided to bite the bullet and invest regardless. I went for the 7 piece travel set that includes:

• Powder brush, 
• Blush brush, 
• Foundation brush, 
• Eyeshadow brush,
• Small shader brush,
• Sponge eyeshadow applicator,
• Nasal shadow brush (I imagine this is used for contouring...)
• Travel bag.

All this costed me around £7.30. Ridiculous, right?!

In my mind, cheap brushes never give the same results as pricier makeup brushes but here is my review of the travel size brushes!

The Powder Brush:

Not a huge fan of this brush - though mostly for size reasons. Travel sized powder brushes are a bit useless in my opinion, I prefer a much bigger brush. On the plus side, the bristles are beautifully soft and do give a good coverage. In the end, I decided to give this brush to my mum, who uses smaller brushes (I'm kind AND giving). 

The Blush Brush:

I love this brush! I'm using to for contouring purposes, rather than blushing (?!) purposes but it's working great. Once again, SUPER soft bristles and a perfect size for my tiny midget hands.

The Foundation Brush:

I'm a keen bean for this foundation brush. It's very small (travel sized, innit) but I quite like that because it means you can get into all the crooks and nannies nooks and crannies of your face. I might even prefer it to my old Mac foundation brush because it's much more soft - my foundation seems to glide on!

The Eyeshadow Brush, The Small Shader Brush and the Nasal Shadow Brush:

All of these are BRILLIANT. I use the nasal shadow brush on my eye creases however, as I have no need for nasal shadow.Which sounds like something very hairy men get after a few hours after shaving their noses.

The Sponge Eyeshadow Applicator:

I hate these things. I really don't know what use they are. This one is not absorbent enough to apply eyeshadow so I'm using it as a bit of a smudger for my eyeliner. A bit of a useless addition to the brush set, I'm afraid. 

My verdict? An excellent makeup set for £7.30. Some of the brushes are a bit redundant but the shadow brushes are worth that money on their own. Definitely a brilliant investment and a great addition to your makeup kit, particularly if you're on a budget!

2 The Fight for Fakery.

Why I’m gluing on false eyelashes and bidding good day to natural beauty.

We’re bombarded with conflicting messages in the media these days: look beautiful (a cross between Mila Kunis and Scarlett Johansson if poss) but don’t overdo it. Get that must have sunkissed look but step away from the fake tan. Peer through big, bold eyes but falsies are a no-no.

The natural look is championed by the BBC’s Snog, Marry, Avoid? show where POD (the most irritating thing on TV, ever) gives the participants a make-under. The personal overhaul device strips the participants of their “fakery” and puts them in rubbish clothes, with crap haircuts/wigs and dull makeup. To be honest, most of them looked better before going on the show and practically all of them go back to their previous looks afterwards. I don’t blame them. False eyelashes are great.

The fact is, most of us look ill without makeup. And those who don’t look ill probably have mascara hidden down their bras. People can shout “she must have low self-esteem!” at me all you like but the proof is in the pics.

Of course, moderation is the buzz word used by fans of makeup/tan/all things artificial. If that works for you then that's great. However, us gals who like to slap on a little more than tinted moisturiser and a slick of mascara shouldn't feel guilty. I've had countless comments along the lines of "...Lauren wears a lot of makeup doesn't she?" or "Why do you fake tan? What's the point?" I would never dream of saying to someone "Why don't you use concealer? You look a bit peaky" and it should work the other way too.

At the end of the day, makeup/tan/extensions/eyelashes exist to improve and glam up your appearance. What's wrong with that? Appearances count for a lot, whether you want to be self-righteous or not, so why not stick on a lash and have a good time!

15 Ruth's A/W'12 Must Have Beauty Looks...

Lauren has asked me to do a spot of make up blogging for you all so here it goes...

This A/W season my must have looks are dewy skin and bold lips!!

Look One: Dewy Skin.

In the cold months ahead I think it's important that we don't let the weather take the glow out of our faces and the best way to do this is with a light reflecting foundation. Here is a list of some foundations I recommend for this look:

• On a budget? Why not try Rimmel Wake Me-Up Foundation.
• Little bit of extra cash in the bank? I really recommend M.A.C Mineralize Satinfinish Foundation.
• For those of you that want to splash out, I love Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturizing Foundation.
• If you usually like a matte face, why not try SLEEK Luminous Pressed Powder over the top to cover those shiney T zones!

Look Two: Bold Lips.

It's really important when doing a strong lipped look to remember that your eyes should stay to a minimum, as you don't want the attention from your lips to be lost. So keep it simple a touch of eyeliner and mascara can go a long way! 

The colour you go for will depend on your skin tone but my favorite places to buy lipsticks from are No.17 (available at Boots in the UK) and M.A.C however an item I have not been able to live without is my Bobbi Brown 1991 lip palette which is still available in some stores if you ask! It has such a wide range of colours and comes with a cute little lip brush so easy to change my look from day with a neutral pastel colour to night with a strong burgundy red!

5 FOTD: My massive Rimmel face.

This is my face today. My nose is looking slightly bulbous and huge but other than that, my face looks relatively normal!

I've seen a lot of FOTDs in which the girls look lovely and natural, wearing a hint of mascara, dab of Chanel lippy and off they go on their merry, naturally beautiful way. Unfortunately, this way of life/face does not work for me. 

Without makeup, I look a little bit like this:

To combat my Voldy face, I pile on makeup with gay and jolly abandon. At the moment, I've taken HUGE advantage of Rimmel 3 for 2 offers (as I am poor, unemployed and my life is ridiculous) so pretty much my whole face is done in Rimmel.

10 5 things they didn't tell you about long distance relationships...

Evening readers!

Long distance relationships are often the norm these days. According to iVillage, more than 14 million people are in long distance relationships and we're most definitely over the "it'll never work" comments made by bitchy people we don't care about.

My boyfriend and I have been engaging in a LDR (apparently this is the technical lingo for a long distance relationship! Inventive.) for around 5 months now. The reason for putting all those miles between us is because I moved back home after university to try and find a job, while he still has one year left. Of course, while it hasn't always been plain sailing, it's going pretty well. We see each other every weekend and make use of texts/skype/phonecalls to make life a little easier. It could be worse.

HOWEVER, there have been some aspects of being apart from each other that have taken me by surprise or that I hadn't thought about at all! So without further ado, here are the five things they didn't tell you about long distance relationships

1. You will need to change your phone contract.

It doesn't matter if you have 500 minutes and unlimited texts (or more!), being in an LDR (yeah!) means that you will run out of minutes and you will run out of texts - I want to call my boyfriend the minute I wake up, before I go to sleep and everything in between. By the end of the month, we've both run out of minutes and have to resort to tactically ignoring each other until Skype time. The solution? Get more minutes. No money? Download whatsapp!

2. You won't be late anymore.

Dispute this if you will, but I maintain that since beginning our long distance adventure, we've both become better at timekeeping. No longer does he have to buy me a H&M scarf to make up for missing the Safari Park, no longer do I have to tell him to come over an hour later as I'm washing my hair. I'm not sure why, but it's probably because we're so excited to see each other that we're early, if anything!

3. Life becomes easier to juggle.

My friends and I are staunch believers in mates before dates; however dates are also important. So is work. And going to the gym. And spending time with family. And starting new hobbies. A positive outcome of long distance relationships is that you have more time to juggle and organise. For me, weekend time is boyfriend time so I have the week days to see friends, cook for my family and also find excuses not to go to the gym.

4. You will want to know what he/she had for lunch.
Its the little things that make you feel closer to your boyfriend/girlfriend. Finding out what they had for lunch, what time they woke up, what they're reading and other bits and bobs, are things I never really used to be hugley interested in. Now, they're important to me because if I can't be with him then I can at least envisage what his day has been like. Kind of like a well-meaning stalker.

5. Absence does make the heart grow fonder, but that doesn't mean you won't bicker.

Of course I miss my boyfriend and treasure the time we have together, however there will always be days when I'm in a bad mood. There will be days when I want to listen to The Saturdays and he wants to listen to Frank Ocean. We don't agree on everything. We're still the same people, distance or not. And that's not a bad thing!

5 INTERVIEW: Dani from Evie Knight Vintage!

Following my last post filling you in on all that's Evie Knight, Dani (owner/creator) has been kind enough to do a short interview with The Teapot Blog!

1. What are your favourite trends this Autumn/Winter?
I don't like to follow trends. It makes me feel like a lemming! One thing I do love in A/W though is a good piece of knitwear! It really can carry you through the season. I like to team my bright graphic mohair jumper with a tight leather skirt and flatform boots.

2. Who are your style icons and why?
It might be an obvious one but Alexa Chung has wooed me ever since her T4 days, and she just gets better and better. I'm all about the long 70s wispy hair and a good silk shirt. Erin Wasson has great style too, shes so unkept and natural and I absolutely love that. Less is more with me!

3. Pick your three favourite items from the Evie Knight boutique.
That's a toughie! I do have a little crush on our Aztec Blazer Coat, its a nice A/W twists on the aztec/navajo trend. I'm also a real sucker for a tartan/plaid print so our 90s grunge jumper is perfect! It would look amazing with leather trousers or a velvet skate skirt. Girls look so amazing when they keep it simple! I think our floral ditsy dress would be great paired with some ripped tights and a pair of creepers. Its also a timeless piece, I could imagine myself wearing it in the summer with some super groovy oversized sunglasses. Keep it effortlessly cool, I say!

4. Describe your personal style.
Indescribable.

7 The Rode Hall Farmers' Market

The Rode Hall Farmer's Market. It's a treasure trove of beautiful food, produce and crafts and a place I love to go to on sunny autumn mornings with my mum (which is exactly what we did on Saturday!). The market is set in the beautiful grounds of Rode Hall, which is a lovely country house in South Cheshire, and it usually has around 50 stalls. There is a huge range of fresh produce as well as pies, cakes, preserves, cheese, chutneys, ciders, wines, jewelry, crafts, meat, fish...the list could go on! Me and my mum bought some cherry and banana yogurt, some tortilla chips, fresh foccacia bread and some mushrooms! I also got some amazing hand made beeswax lipbalm which is helping my horrible dry lips through these chilly autumn days!

I look some photos that will hopefully give you an idea of how lovely the market is.

If you're interested in checking the market out, it is held on the first Saturday of every month (I wish it was more often) and is based just outside of Rode Heath. The market has has a twitter account so have a look and if you're in the area next month...it's the perfect place to find Christmas presents!

11 My favourite beauty products for November!

Evening pals!

It's officially November. Which means there are 48 days until Christmas. There are also only 37 days until The Hobbit film (which is more important, you decide).

It's been absolutely freezing here in Cheshire and all I want to do is sit inside with a cup of tea and a mince pie, but sometimes (in order to buy more mince pies) I have to go outside. Unfortunately, winter always wreaks havoc on my hair and skin so I thought I'd share my favourite restorative beauty products for these chilly November days!

1. Lee Stafford Sea Salt Spray.
   I'm trying out a new Alexa Chung style look with my short extensionless hair and this product is an absolute must have. I love it.
2. Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover.
   Hands down the best eye makeup remover I've ever used. My mascara just slides off and my skin feels soft, non-irritated and refreshed. Not surprising as it has won multiple awards!
3. Clinique Mousse Cleanser.
   I bought this cleanser at the airport so I'm not sure how widely available it is in England, however I really love it - it leaves my skin squeaky clean and reduces the size of my pores. It's worth trying to find if you're looking for a new cleanser!
4. The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo & Conditioner.
   These shampoo/conditioner smell like blueberry muffins! Yummy. It also leaves my hair moisturised, my colour intact and it's ethically sourced. What more could you want?!?
5. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturiser.
   I will always love this moisturiser. It's so light yet deeply moisturising - it's perfect to use under makeup. I have no more to say. Try it. Put it on your Christmas list!

87 Recipe: Smoked Salmon & Caper Salad.

'Ello,

The healthy lunch. That elusive but often thought of meal that has been too long cast aside aside for stodgy pasta, cheese filled sandwiches and buttery panninis. I, for one, hate lunch. I don't know how to approach it. I don't know what to eat to fill me up. How do I avoid beingstarving by 6pm and ravaging the fridge before dinnertime? What constitutes as a healthy lunch? How many calories should I be eating? RAH.

To avoid a cognitive breakdown, I try and think of interesting but healthy lunches ahead of time so I have a few recipes to whip out when I want something tasty, healthy AND filling. And because I'm such a great person, I'm sharing one of my favourites with you!

This is a smoked salmon salad with capers, Greek yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice and it is ridiculously easy and massively tasty!

Please note that my measurements aren't really accurate. I cook by guessing/tasting what flavours will work for me so if you prefer more potatoes or more salad leaves etc, go right ahead! This is also helpful for lazy people like me who can't be bother to locate the scales!

Ingredients:

• 150g smoked salmon slices 
• 3 tablespoons greek yoghurt.
• 1 tablespoon capers
• 2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 2 cloves garlic (crushed)
• 5 baby potatoes
• 1 tablespoon greated cheddar cheese
• 1 bell pepper
• Bowl of mixed salad leaves.

Method:

• First, boil the potatoes until cooked
• Then, mix together the yoghurt, garlic, capers and lemon juice together to make the dressing. 
• Next, add the smoked salmon.
• Chop up the pepper and add to a bowl of mixed salad leaves. 
• Once the potatoes are cooked, add them and the cheese to the dressing.
• Mix with the pepper/salad leaves.

VOILÀ. It takes about 10 minutes to make, tastes amazing and has just over 400 calories!

8 VERDICT: The Retreat Spa.

For anyone who read my previous post, you may have gathered that I was slightly panicked at the thought of spending a whole day makeupless, with ridiculous hair and in a swimsuit.

Apart for a few slight hitches (namely my eyebrows melting off and my red hair dye staining the bathrobe) it was an absolutely lovely day and I feel very relaxed and ready for the week ahead!

If you're wondering what my hair and makeup situation was...

• I wore my hair in a low bun using a hair doughnut.
•  I wore Max Factor Masterpiece Waterproof Mascara.
• I used Rimmel BB Cream 9 in 1 on my face. 
• I pencilled my eyebrows in with Rimmel Proffessional Eyebrow Pencil.
• I also used the Baked-To-Last Blush from the Body Shop on my cheeks! 

It all stayed on brilliantly apart from my eyebrows and I ended up looking a little bit like Voldemort by the end of the day...

The Retreat is based in Leek, Staffordshire and took about half an hour for us to drive from my little village in Cheshire. You get to drive past a llama farm. That in itself is worth it.

When we got there, we were greeted by friendly staff, shown the changing rooms (which were FAB) and given a tour. I have to say, at a first glance it really was beautiful, particularly the spa facilities section which was very earthy with mood lighting and a fancy cave atmosphere. My one criticism would be that the relaxation/conservatory area was a bit haphazardly decorated, with too many random ornaments/pot plants/sofas. It looked like a lovely old lady's living room rather than a classy spa. Saying that, it was cosy and I did nearly fall asleep so it wasn't really the end of the world! It's quite a small spa, with a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, which we used numerous times and were really brilliant. I particularly love steam rooms, I feel like they do wonders for my skin!

They also had free green and fruit tea so obviously I was loving that and had around 20 cups. The food was nice but nothing too fancy (I had a jacket potato with cheese, beans and a HUGE side salad. My boyfriend had a sweet chilli prawn baguette with chips).

Once we had eaten lunch, we had our massages. They were amazing. If I could have a massage everyday, I would. In fact, if I ever get rich I am going to have a live-in masseuse and have one every night before I go to sleep.

I'm afraid I didn't take any pictures as I left my iPhone at home and also, cameras don't tend to work in the jacuzzi SO I've robbed one from The Retreat website :).

Overall I had a relaxing and romantic day, my makeup stayed on relatively well (apart from my eyebrows) and my hair wasn't too ridiculous.

I would definitely recommend The Retreat to anyone who wants a day of relaxation in the Staffordshire area!

22 Romantic spa day with my boyfriend...but what do I wear?!

My lovely boyfriend has booked us a romantic couples spa day at The Retreat Spa in Leek, Staffordshire on Monday. I can't wait. It's going to be amazing! Surprise gifts like this have a place in my life forever.

My back has been aching ever since starting a proper 9-5 desk job in the past couple of months. Although I had an HALF AN HOUR desk chair consultation about how to sit properly (it was hilarious), sitting for 8 hours a day is taking a lot of getting used to! Also, I've been looking for ages for the right career and it's becoming very frustrating and a bit of a worry. It's so nice to know that my other half pays attention when I am whinging about my back aching and not having the job I want!

We're having the Spa Signature Massage, to target the back, neck and shoulders and I can't wait to relieve some of the tension. Our spa day also includes the use of the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna as well as lunch at The Jester Bistro at The Retreat. All sounds great, doesn't it?

OR DOES IT?!

I am a serial worrier/self conscious lunatic when it comes to swimwear. I have bikinis that I ignore every year because I haven't actually started using my Nike Runner app or stopped eating every cake that is offered to me. The only option is a swimsuit really, but how do you look fashionable, on-trend as well as comfortable? I am also quite aware that it is Thursday and I have around 3 days to come up with a solution!

We'll be provided with a dressing gown by the spa, obviously, but if everyone is going to be strolling around looking beautiful and groomed, I think I might hide in the Bistro and have a scone and a large glass of wine.

Realistically, there are a huge list of things to consider:

• Water proof makeup, lip stains?
• Keeping hair from leaking red dye.
• Keeping hair from becoming afro.
• Do I fake tan?
• If not, how do I hide wobbles?
• If I do, how do I keep from staining bathrobe orange?
• How to avoid irritating my boyfriend by being too self-conscious?!

Am I being neurotic? Definitely.
Do I need to buy a new swimsuit? Probably.

Does anyone have any suggestions in spa attire? How do you cope with the makeup conundrum? How do I keep my hair under control?!

4 Autumn means: BB Cream, lentil soup and a purple cat.

Good afternoon, friends.
Today we are talking about Autumn and some little thoughts and things that pop into my head.

Autumn is my favourite time of year. I love the leaves and wearing coats and fireplaces and walking.
 Last weekend I forced my boyfriend to drive to Statford-Upon-Avon to look at the leaves and also have a hot chocolate at The Real Tea Company. I really recommend checking this cafe out, the range of tea is amazing and it has such a great atmosphere.

TEA aside (I've had 5 cups this morning...it is only 12.33), autumn is the season of soup. I love soup. Everyone loves soup. If you don't love soup, I'm not sure what to say to you. Maybe you need to re-evaluate your soup opinions. Today, I have lentil, bean & barley soup and I can't wait to munch away.

I've also recently bought the Rimmel BB Cream. I've tried a number of BB Creams (mostly low end of the budget scale because I'm poor) and I've not really been hugely impressed. The SPF is a nice touch but I can't say I've seen the 1000000 benefits they claim is encased in a little magical tube of BB. This Rimmel one is quite nice though, it's not too heavy, looks great for work and (so far) has stayed put. I would say it is worth the £6.99 as an alternative for heavier foundation.


I'm going to end this mini-post with a picture of the mug I use at work. It's not particularly classy. It has a purple cat and a chip on it. It has the word "saggy" on it.  It wasn't even for my 18th Birthday. But we've been through a lot, me and my saggy purple cat. And what could be better than something that holds the ridiculous amounts of tea I drink at work? And as a typical teapot...what is better than a cuppa on a cold autumn night?

4 What has been inspiring me today: Ben Howard.

Afternoon pals.

I'm the type of girl who will always be woo'ed by an acoustic guitar. I'm pretty sure most girls are, really. This doesn't mean that when Kanye is played on a night out I'm sat in a corner drinking a healthy glass of Merlot thinking, "I wish I was at home in a candlelit room listening to Damien Rice." No. I will most likely be in the middle of the dancefloor, waving my tequila in the air pretending to be Kim Kardashian. 

BUT. Kim, Kanye and tequila aside, there's very little better than chilling with some folk music and my discovery of 2012 has been Ben Howard. I'll admit, I'm slightly late on the uptake - Howard's album was recorded in 2011 and various singles released since then but I got there finally and I'm absolutely loving 'Every Kingdom'.

The sound is a bit Ed Sheerany but with better lyrics (I'll never forgive him for the "crumbling like pastry" line). The melodies are brilliant, his voice is beautiful and so is his face. 

'Old Pine' and 'Keep Your Head Up' are a perfect soundtrack for autumn walks. 

So for this, I have to say thank you to my boyfriend for introducing me to Ben and I can't wait for anything else he has to do!

2 The first EVER Teapot Blog post...

Welcome!

I have the great privilege of writing the first ever Teapot Blog post. 
May it go down in history.

So. Why the Teapot Blog, you ask? 
Well in a nutshell, I'm short and a little bit stout (must start running). I drink tea all day with gay abandon. Also, this is a blog.

But don't be fooled! Whilst I will probably write more about tea than strictly necessary, this is a Cheshire lifestyle blog and I plan to cover a range of topics including fashion, beauty, restaurants, cooking, travelling, music and much more!
